CONCHAS HOUSE

I 2018

The only residence on this small beach on the north coast of São Paulo, this project is set on a small plateau that turns its back on the sloping terrain and dense forest of the mountains which, like an amphitheater, close in on the sands of Praia das Conchas.

The house is inspired by the different heights of the hill in order to dialog with the landscape and not lose itself in scale. Linked by a mixture of contemporary and traditional language, both blocks are elevated off the ground and reserve the caretakers' bedrooms, garage and service spaces below.

On the highest part of the topography, a volume holds the six overlapping bedrooms and, as the land slopes downwards, a second body for the social area is placed linearly, following the silhouette of the land. This pavilion opens strategically onto the gaps in the forest and the framed views of the islands on the horizon. The metal structure that supports it, which could be reminiscent of a whale bone, was designed by the owners who wanted "a roof with tiles". Designed to allow a gap in the ridge, minimizing the difference in luminosity between inside and outside, the light dances, announcing the passage of time.
